How to Spot AAA Fan-Grade vs Counterfeit Football Jerseys

A practical guide for wholesale buyers — identifying AAA fan-grade reproduction jerseys versus low-quality counterfeits using fabric weight, stitching, badge construction, and packaging.

Published 2026-06-18 · Buyer Education

The football jersey wholesale market spans a wide quality range — from genuine retail jerseys at $50+ wholesale to obviously fake AA-grade backstreet jerseys at $3-4. Most successful resellers operate in the middle: AAA fan-grade reproduction jerseys, which look and feel close to retail but ship at $8-12 wholesale.

Fabric Test

The single biggest visible quality differentiator is fabric weight. AAA fan-grade: 160-180 GSM polyester with proper double-knit weave. AA / cheap counterfeit: 120-140 GSM single-layer polyester, lighter and more transparent. Hold the shirt up to the light — if you see your fingers clearly through the fabric, it is low-grade.

Badge Construction

The club crest and league patches are where counterfeits show their cost-cutting:

  • AAA fan-grade: woven crests with raised relief, or properly heat-pressed tonal badges with smooth edges. The colors match the official kit within Pantone tolerance.
  • AA / counterfeit: printed crests that crack on first wash, off-color matches, fuzzy edges. The Premier League sleeve patch may be misaligned by 5+ mm.

Stitching

Run your finger along the hem and underarm seams. AAA uses lockstitch with 8-10 stitches per inch — even, no loose threads. Counterfeit often uses chainstitch with 5-6 stitches per inch and visible thread tails. Counterfeits unravel after 5-10 washes.

Number and Name Print

Heat-press print on a counterfeit will bubble at the edges within 30 days of wear. AAA fan-grade uses proper sublimation transfer paper with heat-set adhesive — the print becomes part of the fabric and survives 50+ machine washes.

Color Accuracy

Compare your sample against the official club store photo. The reds should be the same red, the blues the same blue. Counterfeit jerseys are often 15-20% off in color saturation. AAA fan-grade matches within 5%.

Packaging

AAA jerseys ship folded with tissue paper inside a sealed clear plastic bag with the club logo or wholesaler-branded bag. Counterfeits ship in unbranded shrinkwrap with no inner packaging. Some counterfeits even include a fake "Adidas" or "Nike" retail hangtag — this is illegal trademark infringement and you should not stock these.

Where Jerseys.cc Sits

We supply AAA fan-grade reproduction jerseys only — no AA/cheap-counterfeit stock, no fake retail-branded hangtags. Our jerseys are marketed and sold as factory-direct fan-grade reproductions, not as authentic retail product. This positioning protects you from trademark claims and aligns with most online marketplace policies.

Reseller Checklist

  1. Always order a $12 sample before placing a bulk order from any new supplier.
  2. Wash the sample at 30°C and tumble dry low. Check for color bleeding, badge cracking, or stitch unraveling.
  3. Verify the hangtag and inner packaging don't fraudulently mimic retail.
  4. If a supplier offers prices below $5 wholesale, it is almost certainly AA-grade counterfeit — walk away.
