Football Jersey Fabric Types & Care Instructions for Resellers

A complete guide to football jersey fabric — polyester weight, weave types, breathability, care instructions, and which retail-customer instructions to print on your packaging.

Polyester is the universal fabric for football jerseys — but not all polyester is created equal. Here's the technical breakdown for resellers who want to confidently explain quality to retail customers.

Fabric Weight (GSM)

Grams per Square Meter is the single most important quality indicator:

  • 140-150 GSM — Authentic retail tier. Lighter for player performance, but more transparent under stadium lights. Costs more.
  • 160-180 GSM — AAA fan-grade (what we supply). Optimal for retail durability — survives 50+ machine washes, holds shape, durable for everyday wear.
  • 120-140 GSM — AA / low-grade counterfeit. Too thin, transparent under light, unravels after 5-10 washes.

Weave Types

  • Double-knit (default) — Two interlocking layers for body durability. Standard for outfield jerseys.
  • Mesh inserts — Open-weave panels at underarms, lower back, sides. Standard for Player Version, optional on Fan Version.
  • Honeycomb structure — Texture-embossed pattern increasing surface area for sweat wicking. Premium retail feature; we replicate on Player Version.

Care Instructions to Print on Your Packaging

Include these on the inside hangtag or care label:

  • Machine wash cold (30°C / 86°F max). Hot water shrinks polyester slightly and fades sublimation prints over many cycles.
  • Inside-out for the heat-press numbers and sponsor logos. Reduces friction abrasion.
  • No bleach. Standard polyester does not respond to chlorine bleach — colors will fade or yellow.
  • Tumble dry low or hang dry. High-heat drying can degrade heat-press transfers over time.
  • Do not iron over heat-press graphics. Iron only on the inside, on a low setting.
  • Do not dry clean. Dry-cleaning chemicals will damage sublimation prints.

Color Fastness

AAA fan-grade jerseys retain color through 50+ machine washes when care instructions are followed. The first 3-5 washes may show slight color migration to other fabrics — wash separately from white garments for the first three cycles.

Shrinkage

Polyester is dimensionally stable — minimal shrinkage even in moderate heat. Expected shrinkage: ≤2% length, ≤1% width over the lifetime of the garment. This is why our cm measurements are reliable for sizing decisions.

Sweat Absorption vs Wicking

Polyester does not absorb sweat — it wicks moisture away from the body to the outer fabric surface where it evaporates. This is why football jerseys feel cool during exercise (the opposite of cotton). The wicking effect is why football jerseys are popular as casual sportswear beyond match-day wear.

For Retail Customer Service

When a customer complains about a jersey "feeling slippery" or "not absorbing sweat" — that's actually correct polyester behavior, not a defect. Use the wicking explanation. If a customer reports color bleeding after the first wash, ask if they washed cold and separate — most issues resolve with proper care.
